Valley Ambulance Authority Overview
Valley Ambulance Authority was established in 1972 as the first municipal ambulance authority in the United States. VAA provides EMS and medical transportation services to Moon Township, Coraopolis Borough, Crescent Township and Neville Island. VAA also provides service to certain parts of the Pittsburgh International Airport.
The governing body of each member municipality appoints representatives to the Board of Directors, who oversee the operations of Valley Ambulance Authority.
What began as a primarily volunteer emergency service has developed into a highly technical EMS and medical transportation system staffed by more than seventy (70) dedicated professional paramedics, emergency medical technicians, dispatchers and office personnel.
The combined fleet of emergency vehicles include seven (7) mobile intensive care units (ambulances), four (4) special service / wheelchair vans and a paramedic / supervisor response vehicle.
All VAA Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians are certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and attend rigorous continuing education classes throughout the year. VAA responds to every emergency call with an ALS (Advanced Life Support) crew consisting of at least one Paramedic and an Emergency Medical Technician.
Funding:
Valley Ambulance Authority is a non-profit municipal authority and is primarily supported by subscription fees, insurance payments and donations. VAA DOES NOT RECEIVE ANY MUNICIPAL TAX REVENUE and is a IRS designated 501 (c) 3 charitable organization.
Call Volume:
Combined responses for VAA and QVAA totaled more than 11,000 last year including ~ 8,000 ambulance and ~ 3,300 wheelchair van transports.
